Dynamics of the urbanization level of Namibia in the 20th–21st centuries

Abstract:

The article examines the features of urbanization processes in Namibia since the beginning of the 20th century. Based on census data from 1921 to 2023, the article analyzes the dynamics of urbanization levels at the national and regional levels. It shows that the differentiation of natural and historical conditions, as well as the specific features of the country’s socio-economic development, have led to a pronounced regional disparity in urbanization processes. According to the level of urbanization, the size of the urban population, and their dynamics, the article identifies the central, peripheral, and semi-peripheral regions of Namibia. Special attention is given to Windhoek, which has been the driving force behind the country’s urbanization trends throughout the period. Despite the continued overdevelopment of the capital region, there is a current trend towards reducing the polarization in urbanization levels, which is manifested in the intensification of urban growth in the peripheral and semi-peripheral regions and the emergence of alternative urban growth points. The features of urbanization processes reflect the youthfulness of Namibia’s urban settlement system, which poses significant challenges for its planning.
